What are earth pigments and traditional techniques?
Earth pigments are organic colors extracted from naturally occurring substances. You can make pigment out of anything by distilling it into a fine powder through processes like grinding or boiling, sieving and air drying. Cave people, traditional Indian painting styles and the European 'old masters' all made their own paints.
Pigments provide the paint's color while binders allow them to adhere to different surfaces and have different properties. Oil paints are historically made with a drying oil; usually linseed, poppy seed or walnut. The binder is what differentiates one type of paint from another. The pigment and binder is then hand mulled into a thick, creamy oil paint. Glass mullers and knives are used to slowly, like an artisan, create its texture.

You can customize the texture of your paint by adding a note under 'Special Instructions' in your checkout cart.
Textures range from thick [Impasto or palette knife work] to creamy [Alla Prima or studio standard] to milky [Glaze or underpainting]. No preference? No problem! Our default texture is a thicker creamy paint, perfect for all applications. To adjust the texture at home, simply blend in a drop of linseed or walnut oil.
